Lonely Planet is good and generally pretty up to date.
I couldn’t even guess how much money you would need, my advice to you is, once you work out an amount, double it. Then you should be right.
I’d say allow $50 a night for accommodation and food minimum, extra for bus and train fares, entry fees, etc.
Airfares fluctuate wildly, the 3 main carriers are Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue, check their sites because you may get good deals online, or else sites like list all fares for all airlines.
Touristy places should be avoided at all costs, but my must-sees are Sydney, Cairns, Melbourne, Alice Springs and everywhere in between.
You are best off researching all this and like I said at the start, the Lonely Planet website is good, as is

Hope you have a great Holiday..Australia is a wonderful destination..I`ve been 6 times..
Blue Mountains are a must….awesome.
Sydney Opera house.,I suggest you take the guided tour
Sydney Harbour Saturday evening the atmosphere is electric…
Bondi Beach although disappointing you have to see it.
car hire is reasonable and petrol certainly cheaper than England.
Australia is totally multi cultural so be prepared for some fantastic restaurants…
The people are friendly and helpful but out side of a major town be prepared for everything to close early evening…i.e 9.00pm..ish…they like to entertain in the house.
How much money you will need is like asking how long is a piece of string…it depends on what you want to do.
Enjoy

The main attractions you should see are Ayers Rock, Cairns- the rainforest and the reef, and also Sydney. You could also go to Kangaroo Island which is near Adelaide and also Melbourne has the Great Ocean Road.
How much money you need depends on what kind of experience you want.
